Between Macedonia and Thessaly, Olympus dominates. The country’s tallest mountain range is indissolubly linked to ancient worship and the rarest representatives of Greek flora and fauna. From its roots on the Aegean coast to the peak of Mytikas, Olympus hosts a unique kaleidoscope of wildlife at about 500 square kilometers of its surface. Besides its rich fauna is also rich in its flora. Given the area’s location, the short distance from the sea and the abundance of different soil and climatic conditions, the vegetation zones are not clearly divided, as species are interpenetrating from one zone to the other. The number of plant species is impressive: About 1,200, of which 18 are endemic.

Starting from the coast to 300 meters altitude, where many alopelets are found, thyme (Coridothymus capitatus), withe (Vitex agnus-castus), hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna), etc.

Between 300 and 600 meters altitude, the dominant plant is Quercus coccifera (saw-chestnut).

The forest – between 500 and 1,500 meters – is dominated by black pine (Pinus nigra), beech (Fagus sylvatica) and fir (Abies borisii-regis), as well as many interesting aromatic-medicinal herbs such as Sideritis (Sideritis scardica), oregano (vulgare) and various species of sage (Salvia spp.) and achillea spp. At the high altitudes of this zone the endemic pine of Pinus heldreichii is found.

In the alpine, over 2,500 meters, where trees are absent, we find rare and endemic plants (Achillea ambrosiaca, Cerastium theophrasti, Omphalodes luciliae, Festuca olympica etc.)
On the southwest side of Olympus is the Pythian area. A place with a distinct history, it is said that Alexander the Great used this territory as a passage to Thessaly.
Particular territorial and climatic conditions. It is a combination of calcareous soils with good drainage and a special microclimate characterized by the great temperature differences between day and night.
All of the above are in favor of the production of aromatic and medicinal plants with high content of essential oils.
